Question by NavyMA: Need help nighttime potty training my 2 year old son!!?
My son is almost 3 and has been potty trained during the day for about a year. The only problem is he wets the bed at night. I’ve been putting him in a diaper but lately he has been wanted to do odd things. one of which is refusing to sleep in a diaper…the other is sleep on the floor. I’ve tried putting pads down but he gets really upset and refuses to sleep on the pad. so……HOW DO YOU NIGHTTIME POTTY TRAIN!??!

we used to wake up our son in the night. Before sleeping we used to tell we will do that so he was okay. After a week or so he was okay. Then to avoid getting up in the night he used to go just before sleeping. Luckily he trained in a week. good luck!

i cant really answer this but my son is doing the same thing.. i have realised that he only wets himself just as he wakes up.. i have started to make him go potty just before bed and get up and help him to the toilet first thing. I would check through the night and see when he is wetting himself & then maybe wake him up before you go to bed or if you wake during the night take him too
GOOD LUCK

my daughter just turned two. i cut off ALL liquids at least 2 hours before bed. she will occasional take a sip of bath water(i know it’s so nasty) and because she has no fluids there is no pee. i make her go as soon as she wakes up as well. good luck

I have a friend who’s a Preschool Director. Her strategy is to allow them to wet the bed. The idea is that they wet the bed and become uncomfortable. From this, they learn to wake themselves up at night. It comes at a price. Weeks of pain, changing the sheets once or twice a night. At the end of it, you have a 3 year old who has learned how to wake himself up at night to go potty.
I tried it this way for a bit and decided to go a different way, which I can see will definitely take longer. I wake my son up each night 3 hours after his bedtime. This requires that I sometimes have to stay up later than I’d like, or to wake up to take him to the potty. He goes potty then and sleeps through the rest of the night usually without incident. It works for me in that he doesn’t wet the bed. But, he’s not really learning to wake himself up, but I don’t have to change his sheets at 3 am either. Good luck!

My nephew had the same problem for a long time, so we made sure he slept in pull ups (no diapers because he was a “big boy”!) at night and didn’t give him liquids right before bed. He also had to go to the potty right before bed and we would even wake him up and make him go again. Trust me, it takes a long time and some patience but eventually the little guy will get the hang of it.
