Question by smile2besweet: Early Potty training, what is the best method?
Our oldest was potty trained by two years old and honestly we did very little in helping her. I know children are different but our second and last daughter just turned one and she is already showing signs of going less in her diaper and knowing the word and sign “Potty”.

What is the best method to help move things along. I know there are all kind of new methods out there since our first born ten years ago. Thank you!

The very best and most effective method is to wait until children show the following three signs of readiness for potty training:
1) can pull their own pants up and down by themselves
2) can VERBALLY tell you WHEN they need to go -before, not while they are peeing or after they have peed
3) have the physical control to stay dry for long periods of time

Until they show these signs you are doing nothing more than training yourself to run them to the potty every 10 minutes and mop up puddles on the floor continuously.

Please do not force your child to go on the potty i tried that with my oldest and she was not potty trained till she was 4. My youngest is going to be 4 tomorrow and she pretty much potty trained herself on her own she has an occasional accident but you cant make them otherwise they will be completely against it. They will be ready when they are ready.

try her in pullups and easy clothes.

put the potty where she can get to it easy

praise her if she gets it right

don’t fuss if she gets it wrong

just be patient and encourage her

You do pretty much the same things – get a child sized potty, ask her if she will sit there, lots of praise for results but no critisism for accidents.

I will caution you that despite being able to sign and maybe knowing what goes on in her diaper, even if she has some early success, she will almost definitely regress at some point. Kids at that age don’t truly (usually) understand cause/effect. My own daughter was like that mostly because she was copying her older sister but ended up being potty trained for ‘real’ at about 2 1/2.
