Question by mrs. greatness: Please Help!!! 5 year old pooping in pants and wetting bed.?
My five year old stepson, who lives with us a week and his mom a week, wets the bed almost every night and poops in his pants almost everyday (even at school). His mom puts pullups on him at night and says that bed wetting runs in her family. We refuse to put pullups on a 5 year old that goes to school. As far the pooping, he will do it in his pants and then take it out and throw it behind his dresser and wipe it all over his bedroom. When you smell it and ask him about it he will lie but then finally admit that he did it. Then he will go to the commode and finish if you make him. But unless you make him go to the bathroom, he rather just poop in his pants. He says that I didn’t ask him if he needed to go. I don’t feel that I have to remind a 5 yr old. He’s not constipated b/c he will finish everytime in the toilet. PLEASE HELP. I’m about to go crazy with the bedwetting and pooping during the day. Punishment don’t work, doesn’t bother him to have to clean up the mess either
He has been potty trained since he was like 3. He has a one year old sister at our house and 8 month old at mom’s. I’ve read this can cause it too. But how do you stop it?
And me and his dad have been together since he was like 2.
By the way, our children do not even drink sodas. Only kool-aid, juice, sunny delight and water. We do get up around midnight and again around 3, but still somehow manages to pee the bed between 3 and the time that he gets up to go to school. But peeing the bed isn’t even the major issue, it is pooping in his pants during the day!!!!!!!!
And we do not allow him to have anything to drink after 7pm. 5pm seems kinda harsh in my opinion.

Actually for a while you will need to remind him to go. Children sometimes get caught up in what they are doing, and will forget to go to the bathroom.

Encopresis.
My son had it, too. Google it. My son got over it, but it wasn’t until he was 12, it’s not easy, it’s not fun. Try taking him to the gastroentologist first to make sure his colon is okay, if it is, you might want to think about seeking psychological help. Good luck, and remember, punishing him will NOT make it better, when he does this, he should be responsible for his own clean-up, pack an extra pair of clothes for him to take to school, with a plastic bag to bring home the soiled ones in.
Good luck…

sounds like a definite split parenting issue – having problems with the divorce. pretty common to act out in those cases. big changes like that almost always coincide with behaviors like that. talk to a counselor for sure. i don’t think punishment is the way to go – especially since its not working. good luck.

Sounds like his way of being angry. Try not to take it personally if you can. Like tantrums, the more you react, the worse it will get. Poor kid is pushed from pillar to post, but still too old to be making that sort of mess and smell in your home. Hard love – make him clear it himself? Not sure his mam is helping or hindering. Maybe she’s doing what she needs to do in her circumstances. Any chance of a family mediator getting involved?

“We refuse to put pullups on a 5 year old that goes to school.”
Then continue to wash his underwear and sheets. He is 5 years old…not 15. Cease all soda drinking, number one it has no nutrtional value and number two it causes gas. The gas causes bloating and the bloating puts pressure on the bladder. Do not allow him to have anything to drink after 5:00pm. Set an alarm clock for his FAHTER to get up with him at midnight and take him to the bathroom. Once he gets into the habit dad will be able to forgo the alarm at midnight. If all else fails his FATHER should take him to the doctor there could be psychological or physical problems. As far as Punishing him…STOP you’re not helping the problem by doing so…you are only hurting a very small child but if that makes YOU feel good…
