Question by cfisher4234: What are the first steps to take when potty-training?
We are beginning to potty-train our son. However, I have no idea what the first step is? Do I just sit him on his little potty every time I change him? Every time I go? What?

depends what method you want to use. this is what we did with my daughter, and though it was stressful at first, it worked and that pays off in the end!
we got rid of all of her diapers and bought the gerber training pants (they have more padding in them to catch accidents). i stayed home for a week and just put her in the underwear. we stayed in her playroom (it is a tile floor-easy to clean). i set a “potty timer” and every time it rang, i would yell “potty time!”. the first 2 days, every 30min. then after that every 45min, then on the last few days, every hour. only put him there for 3-5 minutes… read books, sing songs etc. if he goes, do the “potty dance” and he will be so excited. this makes it to where you dont need to be giving him treats when he goes. kids like it just as much to have complete parental attention.
by the third day, my daughter was yelling “potty time” with me when the buzzer would go off, and she only had 1 or 2 accidents. it took about a month to be completely accident free.
GOOD LUCK! patience is the secret key to potty training!

Start by taking him to the potty every 40 minutes whether he has to go or not. Let him sit there for a few minutes, sing a potty song, and then get up. Praise him if he goes but don’t get upset if he doesn’t. You have to be consistent and patient. It will take time but if you aren’t consistent with it, there will be no progress.

Our first steps are letting her watch us potty, wipe, flush the potty for us, wash hands with us. Also us never telling her “ew!” when changing her, because I don’t want her to hide when she poops for fear of grossing us out. Instead we celebrate her poopy diapers. Then I’ll be waiting until she can tell me before she’s going to go to the bathroom, one way or another. Next will be a book about the potty. Then we’ll look for a potty seat and big-girl training pants (pull-ups are far too expensive and the training pants help them feel when they’re wet more.) Then I’ll just encourage her to sit on the potty whenever she feels like she has to go.
