Question by Baby Julie due 5/12: What do you suggest for toilet training pull-ups or cotton training pants?
I feel that pull-ups might delay the training because kids will use them just like diapers. My son is 23 months old and he has actually been training for a week now. I put him in the underwear and he wat in them a few times thew first day then went in the potty after that. He wets in his pants sometimes like when we leave the house or when he is playing. And has pooped a few times in the potty as well. I can’t believe his success thus far. I have pull-ups for him to wear mostly when we leave the house and then for naps and bedtime. What’s worked well for your kids?
I want to get opinions from both sides.
Also we have 2 3year old boys in my daycare center that use pull-ups and they pee in them and know they won’t make a mess. I try to tell the parents to ditch the pull-ups and put them in underwear because I know that the mess would bother them. And they would train sooner.

I honestly put my son straight into underwear, but I put pull ups on him when we went out anywhere. There were a few accidents of course, but it worked pretty well.

i used pulls for both my girl and boy and they worked great in each case. they tought that the pull-ups were big kids underwear and that made them feel “big”. oh yeah..my kids are 11 years apart.

  2. Betsy Says:

Underwear. Pull-ups are just glorified diapers that cost even more than what we already spend.

    Cotton–NOT pull-ups.

I use panties durring the day and pull ups at night. My little girl sleeps really hard so the night time is harder. I also have been giving her less to drink at night and nothing after 6pm.(she goes to bed at 7:30) Now she does have accidents every now and then. Mostly when she is outside playing!!! Good luck and congrats!!

IME pull-ups were useless – apart from on the motorway when you can’t stop when needed. As you’ve spotted, they may as well wear a nappy.

Wet knickers focus their attention much better. You do need to be on the ball though, esp when you can see they’re really absorbed in doing something.

Warm weather is easier – puddles on the lawn don’t matter. Just stick him a nappy on for bedtime till he’s got the hang of it when he’s awake. Once he’s cracked daytimes, and is getting up with (generally) a dry nappy, put a rubber sheet on his bed and go for it. What we had to do with my son for a while was wake him up at our bedtime and walk him to the loo because he slept sooooo soundly (WW3 could still take place under his bed unnoticed and he’s nearly 17!). No good lifting him – he has to be awake for it to work.

Girls are easier … pos cos they’re fussier about what they sit in, even before it goes cold.

our 2 1/2 yr. old daughter is pretty much potty trained…we used the regular cloth underwear during the day, and when shes playing check in with her every little bit to reminder to go potty, before we leave a place with a potty we all have a potty break to try and avoid accidents, then at night the bed time pull ups, we started cutting liquids out about an hour before bed, and having her go when she wakes up in the morning and so far that is working to keep the pull ups dry.

I would put him straight into underwear. The pull ups absorb just like diapers and the child does not know that they are wet. The Pull ups that feel cold might work if you want to go pull ups. Once he realizes that he is wet it might go alot faster for you. Good luck

When I started potty training with my little guy, he was staying dry all night long, and during naps. He had just turned two, and I just quit buying diapers, I put him in the padded cloth underwear, and it took us 8 days to be potty trained. He just did not like the feeling when he would mess, because he really knew it was there. Going out might be a little different, but I fully believe that pull ups just prolong the training. This is just what worked for us, so I hope it helps. Good Luck.
