Question by Elizabeth’s mommy: mom’s and dad, when did you start potty training your toddlers?
my daughter just turned one and i was wondering when you parents started potty training and what methods did you use? i plan on using bribery and a doll. what age did you start?

bribery? They will usually show interest first. If they do you can buy a potty chair and let them use it. But dont’ expect because they are interested they are FULLY READY. My niece has been sitting on the potty for a couple months (shes 18 months) She still wears a diaper full time though. Between changes we ask her “do you need to go potty” and she says” yes potty pee pee”

Also they need to be able to have a good vocab. If they are not talking well then they aren’t ready either. They need to be able to tell you they need to GO

  1. Lee Says:

Get Gina Fords book called ‘potty training in one week’.

She suggests not even thinking about it until they can tell you when they have pee’d, can pull their pants up and down and understand simple instructions. My daughter was nappy free (in the day) by 2yrs 2 months.

    Good luck

  2. I LOVE my Thumbs-Down Fairy!!! Says:

We were very lucky with my daughter, she virtually potty trained herself. When she was about 15 months old, we put the potty in the bathroom. She would never sit on it for more than 10 seconds, which was fine by me. I didn’t expect her to actually use it, just wanted to expose her to it and give her the opportunity. Then she would sit on it and read stories for a long time, but wouldn’t pee on it. As she got older (closer to 2), we would ask her every now and then if she wanted to pee on the potty. Sometimes she did and sometimes she didn’t. Then she started asking to pee on it all the time, and would sometimes go but it would take a long time. But she is persistent and wouldn’t get off until she had peed. We weren’t totally on board, as I was expecting in June and everyone warned me to wait. anyhow, by 2 and a half, she was fully trained (september), except at night.

We just waited until she was ready. She took the initiative. Once we got on board, she was trained immediately. One day, after her nap, I asked her if she wanted to pee. She said no, so I told her I was taking her diaper off and if she needed to pee to go to the bathroom. She freaked out at first, but half an hour later, peed on the toilet. She hasn’t worn diapers since.

One is too young in my opinion. I would wait at least another year. Can she verbally tell you when she needs to pee? (before she goes) Can she pull her own pants up and down? Can she stay dry for long periods of time? If no, she is not ready.
