Question by Allie: What are some tips for toilet training my puppy?
My puppy had an upset stomach because of the stress of moving into a new home. Because of this we didn’t get to start toilet training him straight away. Now his tummy and excretions are all normal but he keeps on going inside even when we have just taken him out (he does nothing outside).

What should I do?

Thanks in advance,
Allie ♥

Crate training, expect accidents in the beginning but do NOT punish him for them. There’s info on google about crate training, you can search there. Good luck! If you need more info on house breaking feel free to email me.

it is hard work toilet training a puppy. Have a food and water schedule to help with everything. Don’t give him water near bedtime and wake up early to take him out every morning. Then you can go back to bed or get on with your day. you have to stay out until he poops or pees and right after he does give him a treat immediately. He will associate the job with the treat and will be way more comfortable performing the action knowing what’s to come. Scold him using a deeper voice while cleaning up if he goes in the house. Don’t make him smell it or hit him. It is simply not effective and will just make the experience worse. Try to keep a regular schedule the best you can. He will also rely on the time and know okay this is the time to do this. Most dogs also find a “favorite spot” in the yard and always hunt for that place. Try to notice a pattern of where they go and bring them back to that exact spot later and they will sniff the area for the smell of their urine and go there. Eventually, your dog will hold his bladder until you come home just so that he can urinate in his favorite place and get a good treat. Good luck

best thing to do is this:

take him out and ask him to potty if he does then praise him like no other. is he does not potty then he needs to go in his kennel. give him a half hour or hour and then take him strait outside again ask him to potty if he does thats great but sometimes it takes a couple of hours before he will pee outside. also take him out after play time, nap time and food time.

if you cannot watch him he goes in his crate or have him tethered to you by a leash so he is in your site at all times. as he goes potty outside more constantly then you can reward him by letting him out of the kennel for a littler while after he has gone outside to potty. slowly work the amount of time up from there.

but continue to crate at night till he is 6 or 7 months or you are confident he can hold it all night on his own. sometimes growth spurts can cause them to loose control of their bladders.

    also helpful tips:

restrict his water take it away by 8 or 9 pm

feed him at the same time each day because that will get him on a pooping schedule.

crates are your best friend use as often as necessary

if you catch him in the act simply pick him up while he is going if you can if not say no in a sharp firm voice and put him outside and say go potty. if he does not then start the kennel thing over again and keep taking him out till he goes the praise like no other.

and lastly never scold him for messes on the floor its your fault not his he cannot remember what he did past 3 seconds or so.

All puppies have accidents when training so be patient, crate training is a good idea as the other member suggested but I didn’t use crates, The first thing you need to do is get your pup to go toilet outside, you may have to stand outside with it for an hour but this is what it takes. The second the pup has finished going to the toilet and I mean the second it finishes you want to praise like it’s the best thing you have ever seen! High pitched tone, lots of praise and say “good boy/girl toilet” Point to where they went and repeat the same thing, even a small treat to reward. You want to reward good behaviour!
From that point on I would be taking the pup outside every half hour to start with and doing the same thing again. Take the pup out when it wakes up, just after it has eaten, or had vigorous play also.
When your pup messes in the house don’t scold it after it has messed it won’t understand after it has happened, you will be scolding it for standing in a spot for all it knows, if you are going to scold, the second you see the pup peeing or pooing say in a firm tone NO and lift the pup outside IMMEDIATELY, then continue the first method, you don’t need to put it’s nose in it or scold very heavily a simple NO will suffice along with the action of moving the pup. Do not let your pup see you clean up it’s mess, it will think it is ok to mess if it is taken away in front of them.
I have done this method with both my pups, the first got the hang of it in a week and obviosuly had a few accidents here and there but not often, my other pup had a kidney infection so I had to wait to scold until he had antibiotics, he couldn’t physically help it, I still praised when he went outside.
If you keep this up your pup will learn that inside messing is bad and outside is good, praise where needed and scold lightly where needed.
You don’t want to scold too heavily as the pup will never want to go to the toilet in front of you again and will hide in corners to go. You want to teach your pup that it is good to go toilet but only outside.
