Question by Sheila: Toddler boy potty training ?
My almost 3 year old twin boys began potty training yesterday. I ended up spending way too much money on a very large amount of old fashioned cotton training pants with the thick crotch. Those things are way too expensive, but I knew I would need alot to make it thru a day. So far they are doing very well, better than I even expected. My question is: Is it ok to have them peeing sitting down? That’s just how we got the first time to happen and they have kept on with it. I do have have 4 boys total (two teens with these 2 toddlers) and a husband, but I am the one home with them during the day, so they only see an occasional man standing up to pee. I am very thankfull they are peeing in the toilet, but will I be able to later get them to do it standing and I guess their Dad would be the one who actually would want them peeing the more manlier way!

My oldest son was sitting down when potty training and peeing in the potty. When he got till bit older and taller then he started standing up without anyone telling him. He did it on his own. Since I am a single mom. Right now I am potty training my three year. I am doing it sitting down since he little and wouldn’t be able to stand up. But sitting down be fine when the time is right you can let do standing up.

It’s easy to teach them. Just throw some cheerios in the toilet and tell them to “aim and shoot”. They love the silliness of it all and get the idea quite quickly.

I potty trained my oldest son as a single mother, and had no other choice but to show him how to go by sitting down. He is now 6 and goes standing up without a problem. For the boys to first learn it is easier to have them sit, and they will learn to stand as they get the hang of using the potty.

Yes, it is okay to have them to sit while peeing. They will eventually start standing when they can reach the rim. They will watch Dad and see how he does it and as soon as they get tall enough, they will do it. Take them to the bathroom and sit them down about every hour or 2. If they do not think that they have to go, sit them down and tickle their stomachs. Sounds crazy, right? It works like a charm!!

What FINALLY got my son potty trained was:
getting rid of the ‘little potty’, getting rid of the fitted seat for the big potty …. then getting him a stool so he could stand up to pee just like his dad.
His dad just decided to take him in there and literally show him!

You should have read the Article yesterday on the Inet. Some women are potty training as young as birth. I not sure they get results until about 6 months of age. Fascinating!
Though your boys older the Concept used may help.

I have a 27-month old son and we’re in the midst of potty training too. Since his two teachers at daycare are female, he has to sit down on the potty but when he’s home my husband takes him into the bathroom with him. Why not have your older sons take the twins into the bathroom with them when your husband is not around? Kids seem to relate better to other kids anyway, even if they are older.
Good luck!

My son is 4 and was trained sitting down. It was just easier in general to do it that way with him. I think he went that way for maybe 3 months, and started standing up to go. I am a single mom, so no one taught him how to pee standing up, he just did it…i think its one of those things like playin with themselves…its just engrained. Good luck!

I think it really helps boys to pee standing up so they can see what is happening and connect the sensations.
What worked for me was The Potty Stool http://www.thepottystool.com I started by just setting it at the toilet. My kids immediately climbed up on the stool and discovered that they could safely and securely use the toilet. This got them very interested in using the toilet and they were potty trained very quickly. Kids like to use what they know mommy and daddy use. And it really is wonderful having your kids independently use the toilet on their own.
I like that I don’t have to double the steps of potty training by training them first in a potty and then training them to stop using a potty. And not dumping and cleaning a potty each time is great. The best thing is that kids use it for years. I hope this helps you
