Question by Hannah’s mommy: Cloth pull-ups/training pants for potty training…any recommendations or ideas?
I may start potty training my 20month old daughter soon, and I am starting to get ideas, etc.
I was thinking of using cloth pull-ups/training pants. Disposable pull-ups seem pointless if she won’t feel wet. I was thinking that if I used cloth, she would feel wet, but not soak her clothes.
I saw online that there are Bummis training pants, and they looked pretty good.
Does anyone have any ideas for cloth pull-ups/training pants or any other helpful hints for potty-training?
I have asked this in a cloth diapering forum on Yahoo groups, but nobody answered my question

What I always do is get a todler potty from wal-mart and panties, put them on her ask her every minute if she needs to go to the potty, she will be like “what ever” at first but after a few accidents she will relize it is serious. A few mistakes will happen here and there at first but she will get the hang of it. Give her stickers or somthing she loves when she uses the potty, but if she makes a mistake comfort her and let her know that everything is ok and you still love her rather than yelling at her. But at first give her the training pull-ups that get cold when she gonna pee until she gets the hang of it a little more.

Get some cotton training pants and some rubber pants to go over them. That works pretty well and doesn’t cost as much as Bummies or Kushies.

I think getting the Bummis training pants is a great idea to start out with. They look like underwear but if she has an accident in them it wont leak all over the floor instantly so you have time to clean her up. I do not recommend pull-ups at all during the beginning stages of potty training because they look and feel just like diapers and newly potty trained kids don’t understand that they aren’t so they will still go to the bathroom in them. You should wait until she has already gotten used to going on the potty and then bring in pull-ups if you need to.
I also reccomend that you buy a few potty training books with her so you can get her excited about potty training, and also have her pick out some big girl underwear that she can wear while she practices going potty. If she wears onesies a lot, you should start buying plain white t-shirts so just incase, she can just lift her shirt up and sit on the potty.
Other than that, just try to make her feel comfortable. Put her on the potty in front of her favorite movie or TV show and of course, once she goes give her a treat! Do not give her something that she has a lot of because it will not be a treat for her.
I’m sure you’ve already heard a lot of these ideas, but you should just try whatever works best for you. Good luck potty training. It can be a nightmare or a disaster. Hopefully it will be easy for you.

I like the bummies. Also, for a quick fix I know Target has thick training underwear (like cloth pull ups, just not as thick) and then waterproof little pants to go over them, which is what we used for my daughter at night for potty training
And yes, cloth pull-ups work awesome. My daughter would always pee in the regular pull ups because they were like a diaper. A few weeks after we switched to the cloth, she got it down… she was sick of having to stop what she was doing to get changed and rinsed off because she hated the feeling of peeing in the cloth.

I think that the cloth pull ups sound like a great idea. But it may be a bit of a hassel for you.
Without really thinking I purchased some cloth pullups. I wasnt trying to potty train, I just used it our of convenience and he poohed in them. It was a total mess trying clean up. But with the cloth training pants she still wont feel very wet. I would just try her on the potty for a few days and see if she communicates to you when she has to go. Then just put her in regular underwear if she does. But I really have no idea, because I havent been through it yet. Good luck!

Some of the disposable training pants have wetness liners if that is all you are worried about. Some kids will pee in the disposable ones just like a diaper because it feels the same to them. With my daughter(I started at 22 months) I used the disposable for the first week then I started using underwear. She will stay dry in her underwear but as soon as I put a disposable on her she will pee in it. I never bought the cloth training pants. I just bought regular underwear.

For at home, put her in big girl undies. Bring her to the potty every 10 or 15 minutes, plus before/after bed, snack, and meals. When you have to go somewhere, put a cloth pull-up on her. That’s what we did. We used Bummis. They are great! Try to stay home for the first week and take her out as little as possible. When babes are first potty training, they go very often, but only a little each time. Soon, they will only go once in a while, but more at a time. GL!

I used regular panties & underwear (I have a girl & boy) and I would ask often if they needed to go. At bed time and nap times I would put a pull up or diaper on them but during the day just the underwear. Some time I would add the rubber pants over the panties but I think the kids where more comfortable without them. After they seen peeing causes them to get wet down there they start wanting to go. Diapers & pull ups absorb so well that my children did not mind going in those but panties and underwear was a whole new story. I potty trained two this way and it worked quickly and pretty easily.

Back in the olden days before pullups, we used padded cloth training pants. They worked good for us. With my granddaughter, we got some pullups and panties, but got rid of the pullups when she was dry during naps and over night. We started at 2, panties only and that didn’t work very well, we waited a month or 2 and tried again and she’s had a couple of accidents since then, but otherwise potty life is good.

we have a kushies and I really like it no leaks.. also there are tons of wahm made ones you can find.. go to hyenacart.com for some ideas. My personal favorites are ditto daddy trainers.
I cloth diaper anyway but I totally agree that feeling the wetness is important.. sure you can buy those ones that feel wet but I don’t think it’s till a few min after they’ve peed.
