Question by kristy_dehaven2001: Help with nighttime potty training plz?
My son just turned 3 and has been daytime potty trained for a few months now. We use pull ups when we go out, just incase. Better to be safe than sorry.

He also wears a pull up @ night. I have started waking him up anywhere from 2 -3 x a night to go potty, he hates it and still usually wakes up soaked in the morning anyways. My husband works til late, so we usually end up having a late dinner, I am thinking that last drink w. dinner is what is doing it. Should I cut off drinks @ a certian time b4 bed? Well anyways any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, something my mom did to make my little sister hate diapers and start using the toilet was that she filled put some grape jelly on the inside of the diaper. When she didn’t want to use the toilet, my mom would bring her the bag of diapers, and show her the one with the jelly. This made my sister think that all of them had the “weird” stuff inside, and she never put on another diaper again, and she used the toilet everytime. lol.

Okay. Getting the child to go during the day is the hardest part. Now let nature work. Let him wear pull ups to bed for the next year dont rush things. He has to get used to knowing when he has to go. Waking a child from sleep is lame. Cut off drinks at 5pm. If dinner is later than that then only a few sips for him. It has to be moderate. His bladder is still getting accustomed to “going when your supposed too” verses “going when needed”. Give it time it will all work out. Remember not to rush things. Best of luck to you.

I love the grape jelly story!

My sons (three of them) all began a natural nighttime potty training. It only took a couple (5 at most) of wet sheet mornings and encouragement by leaving the nightlight on the in the nearest bathroom. Waking your son up during his sleep is probably not something you want to continue to do, as it disrupts his own natural process…but encouraging him to get up and go straight to the bathroom when he wakes is a proven technique. Good luck!
