Question by AlongthePemi: Could anyone share their favorite potty training advice?
I will start training my 3 year old son and I do have lots of info but I would like some more advice to add to form my own training style that works for us. I’m open to all suggestions including night time training and travel advice.
Additional info – he is home with me and not in day care or preschool (that may make a difference in some answers).

I really let her train at her pace. I started off trying to remind her and take her to the potty throughout the day and it was totally unaffective and we were both frusterated. She was potty trained a little after 3. The smartest thing I did was set goals for her. I told her that she had to be potty trained to go to those jumping places. That was a big motivator.

I have to say, I tried EVERYTHING. There is a book called potty train your child in one day. It’s crap. Don’t buy it. I bought special underpants, big girl pull ups, a fancy seat…. nothing.
She just peed in her pants and pooed in secret (on purpose!)
I was fed up . I called my mother she said send her to my house for the long weekend. She will come back to you potty trained. And she did.

Abigail walked in and her Mima said, “Abby I don’t have any pullups, so you are going to have to pee pee in mima’s potty. ”
Of course my too smart little girls said “Lets go to shop-rite and buy some more” but my mother convinced her that there was nothing they could do but go pee in the potty.
I was so sceptical. But it worked.
This is what she also had to do:
Take away the juice cup. The constant flowing liquids into the body makes it impossible to know when it should be time to pee. If you give him a large cup of juice at the table at 9am and he isn’t allowed anymore until 11am you should pretty much be able to figure out when he needs to pee, and anticipate a potty break.
You can’t go anywhere. Stay at home until you have it down.
Don’t ever, ever, ever take out a diaper or pull up again. You can keep an emergency one in the glove compartment of your car, but don’t let him see it and really really really don’t use it.
buy a plastic cover for your son’s bed, place sheets on top and stop all liquids about 2 hours before bedtime. I found switching to water in a glass was the best way to do that without fighting with a 3 year old. If they want a drink they can have one, but it’s just plain water. You will have so many accidents. But eventually, he will decide that the praise and schedule are something he can do.
    good luck.

Well, there are lots of things that you can do. To get him to aim into the toilet and not all over the place, put some cheerio’s in the water and tell him to “aim for the bullseye!” That will keep him focused on where it is pointed. Also you can tape a white piece of paper to the wall next to the toilet and when he goes give him a sticker to put on the paper as his reward. When he gets so many stickers on the paper, take him out to do something really special. NOTE: when you use stickers as the reward, you cannot let him have them at any other time or it will not be a special thing. Whatever method you decide to try remember that little kids do not always understand using the potty. To them they are losing a part of them and then their parents make them flush it away which can be hard on a child. They sometimes will feel like they are losing part of themselves.

Throw away all diapers and pull ups and never buy or use one again. He will catch on.

  4. Fancy That Says:

Well, my youngest had her own little potty chair. She was a timid little thing and I felt this was the least scariest option. She and I struggled for months trying to get her to potty. Then, one day, I had the brilliant idea of putting the ring on the big people’s potty and setting her on it.

As soon as she was on the seat, she said “I not fall down, right mommy”. I assured her she wouldn’t and then she immediatly proceeded to pee.

Poor kid, she was ready to potty train a long time ago and just waiting for her dumb mother to catch on.

Moral of the story, let the child chose which method or seat he wants to use.

I just trained my 2 1/2 year old son in less than 24 hours. I had a bunch of people telling me to train him naked, I was VERY skeptical, but now I’m a believer!!

We hung out only in our kitchen (tile floor) for 1 day. He was naked from the waist down. I offered him lots and lots of beverages and every 4 minutes set him on the potty chair. When he’d go in the potty I’d praise him, let him flush the toilet, sing etc.

He loved flushing the toilet so much that he was starting to sit on the potty every few minutes and push and push til a teaspoon came out and then start cheering!

That was just over a week ago and we’ve had maybe 3 accidents total.

Night time training is something that will come when they’re ready (my daughter was wet at night past her 4 th birthday, over 2 years after she was day trained). We limit drinks after 6:30 and make sure going to the bathroom is the last thing before climbing in bed.

For traveling, we take our potty chair with us and a big jug of water. When a child needs to go and we’re not near a rest stop we just find a place where we can pull off the road, put the potty in the back of the van and let them go. Dump it out and rinse with some water and you’re good to go!

    Pee-Pee Parties!

I was lucky enough to have my mom watch my son while his daycare was closed during Christmas break (week between Christmas and New Years) We had previously talk about potty training at this time because we knew he would be home with one of us.

She took him out and bought the following – a doll that potties, party hats, party wistles, party gift bags, and healthy treats for inside the bags. (All at dollar store)

She put the baby on the potty, and it did its business, then she put the hats on all of them and blew the wistles, and they all got treats. She asked my son if he wanted to do it again, but said the baby was all done and he had to go potty. Worked like a charm! After three days he was potty trained, and they had tons of fun in the process.

As for nap and night time, we just made sure that he didn’t drink alot before bedtime and used the bathroom before. If he did wet himself I would wake him up and he would have to help change the dirty sheets. After two or three nights he was able to wake up and use the bathroom. Good Luck to you.

I wanted to train my kids without doubling the steps and it really helps boys to potty train standing up so they can see what is happening and connect the sensations. What worked for my son is The Potty Stool http://www.thepottystool.com This stool makes any toilet kid- sized. My son really loved using the toilet like his mom and dad. I like that this stool cuts potty training in half by eliminating the potty chair. This stool really made all the difference for my kids. Hope this helps you.
