Question by GreenTeddy: How to organise puppy toilet training around a toddler?
I have a 12 weeks old puppy which needs potty training. I also have a 15 months old toddler who i cannot leave in the house on his own to take the dog out every hour. Puppy would do her needs everywhere BUT outside. She has a spot in the conservatory where she is supposed to do it when she is in but won’t use it all the time. Any ideas please?

You should have thought of all the training needs and the age of your child before ever getting a puppy.
Being a breeder, I never home a pup to anyone with children under the age of at least 5 years old.
This of course says volumes about the breeder you got the pup from.
Obviously it is overwhelming to care for a toddler as well as a pup. You really should return the pup and wait until your child is older before getting a pup.
You can not expect a puppy, who in itself is a baby the same as your toddler, to know where you want it to eliminate. Pups can not hold their bodily functions for very long periods of time and when they have to go , they do.
A pup needs to be taken outside frequently and on a schedule regardless of you having a toddler.
So the best thing you can do is either figure out a way to take the pup out hourly for 10-15 minutes or return the pup to the byb that you got it from.

Quite simple with a few different techniques.
1. Train the puppy to do his business on command.
2. Crate train it. (NEVER leave a puppy or a dog in a crate more than is absolutely needed).
3. Do you have a garden? Just take it to a grassy/comfortable spot every 2 hours.
How to train the pup to do his business on command:
When you see him doing it, say the chosen command. I use ‘make’ because it doesn’t sound like any other commands she knows. It is only 12 weeks, so it’s not gonna get it ASAP, but keep at it. It’s so valuable throughout the dog’s life when you just want it to hurry up and pee so you can go back inside in winter! Say the command, calmy praise and then go back inside. When you think she kinda gets it, start saying it just as he’s about to ‘make’ – when you’re she’s understood, you can just tell her when to go and then calmy praise her when she does.
Crate training: When you can’t supervise the pup, put it in a space small enough so that it can only stretch and stand, but not make itself a little area to pee. Dogs don’t soil their own beds. Right after taking it out, carry it (if you can) or walk it quickly outside and let it pee. Only use the crate when they would normally be sleeping. Feed the pup all her meals in there so she gets used to it.
I don’t know if your conservatory is an indoor one or outdoors, but training a dog to go inside is a bad idea most of the time. Outside is best, so they don’t get confused. If you’re absolutely desperate, use pee pads and smudge a little of the dogs own urine where you want it to start peeing, because it’ll recognise its own smell and know that it’s the toilet spot.
Good luck

This is EXACTLY why I tell people not to buy a puppy until their children are over 5, earliest. So you are now finding out that puppies make messes, which with a toddler = a nightmare!
If you don’t start as you mean to go on, you won’t ever get on top of the house-training – she will continue to go indoors, ANYWHERE INDOORS. Somehow you are going to have to work a taking out every hour schedule into your day, for now. I’m assuming you have a garden so it shouldn’t be too difficult to open the door and take her outside, where dogs should go to do their biz., from day one. She can’t go out for a proper walk until she’s finished her vaccinations in any case. But what then? Are you going to have time in your busy day to get her out for her daily walks?
This is really such a bad idea – and frankly, it may well be that you’d be wise to get this puppy back to her breeder, asap. And wait for another 5 years or so, before bringing a puppy into your family.

Can’t be done.
You WON’T succeed in toilet-training a pooch unless you can predict that it WANTS to go and can recognise its signal (commonly an anxious nose-down circling) and IMMEDIATELY take it to the spot, wait till it obliges, then praise & reward it. And you can’t predict unless you can concentrate & observe well enough to learn Pup’s signal & timing.
You need to organise your baby-focussed activities for when your pup is outside in its security run, and for when your husband is home to look after either the baby or the pup. And you need a “prison” you can hurriedly put Baby into when you HAVE to stop Puppy messing in the wrong place.
Fortunately a baby grows & learns (and MOVES!) MUCH more slowly than does a puppy!
You don’t state the breed. An 8 weeks old GSD can be toilet-trained in one afternoon – but during that afternoon it MUST have 100% of your attention. And it needs revision for the next few days, so that it becomes a permanent habit to go to that place.
A 12 weeks pup should be able to hold on for close to 3 hours, not need to go out “every hour”.

You will be fine. I have three boys ages 7, 4, and 14 months. I’m also potty training a puppy that is 9 weeks old. It’s not easy, but she brings our family such joy. Your 15 month old is not used to you going outside and leaving. Are you in an apartment or a house? We are in a house and I have a strap in booster seat downstairs where we let the puppy out. I give my 14 month old a little snacky treat while in the seat and run outside with the pup. I also put the seat up to the window so he can see me. Try little bribes and he will be ok when you run outside. As long as your son is in a safe place, you will be fine I promise. It will be nice to have your son grow with your new puppy! Don’t worry about mean people on this site. They are silly! Ton of people have puppies and babies at the same time!!!
