I don’t have a child with Autism but I do have a 5 year old son who is behind developmentally and he isn’t potty trained either. He has the physical ability of a 3 year old, the intellectual ability of a 2.5 year old and the speech level of a 2 year old (so he isn’t nonverbal, but he does have limited verbal skills as he can only talk in 2 word sentences. His pediatrician advised me to wait 4 to 6 months and to start up again after I had been trying to potty train for 6 months as she said he clearly wasn’t ready when I was trying. Once he’s closer to 5.5 years old I am going to start up again and hope that he is ready by then.
So maybe waiting awhile might help him be more ready when you try again, so maybe give that a try. Good luck,
