Question by mommyrock: When should my toddler start verbalizing she needs to go potty?
I am potty training my 2 1/2 year old and she is doing wonderfully. But every time she goes potty in the toilet, it is because I prompted her to try. She has yet to tell me she has to go or simply go into the bathroom to go potty by herself. We are only 2 days into this process, but every time my daughter has an accident she never even said she had to go; which on average the ratio to her going in the toilet vs going in her pants is 10 to 1…so she’s doing great! But I don’t want her successes to come only because I am telling her to go. I’m using a book called Potty Training 1-2-3 and it prides itself on two things: 1. Potty training your child in 1-4 days and 2. Being very simplistic. So I’m left with a few questions that the book doesn’t answer.
Another piece of information is that thus far we have been using Pull-Ups rather than cotton training underpants or regular underwear. I don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

I can’t answer the first question about how long it will take before she starts to tell you that she needs to go potty, but my guess, from what you describe, is that it won’t be very long for your daughter. 10 to 1 sounds like great success.

I’m not at that stage yet. My daughter is only 17 months and we are just getting her used to having the potty around. She coincidentally used it twice about 3 months ago when I first bought it. She will sit on it every now and then, but she never uses it. (I wouldn’t have started so early but I live in China where the children are potty trained almost from day one.)

As for the pull-ups, I read somewhere that panties are better because it is more uncomfortable for the child and greater motivation to go in the potty.

Question by anthonysmama1: how to potty train with success
my son will be 18 month this month and has shown interest in the potty since 15 months we have been putting him on the potty about three times a day. but know that he is turning 18 months we would like to really train him know. my son is also on tract with everything and likes to sit on his potty a lot .

i have bought the Gerber training pants and starting next week he will be in them all day expect for when he is napping/sleeping.

my questions are
1. should i take him to the potty every two hours
2. should i give him a reward for going
3. about how long does it take to completely potty train a average toddler
4. how long each time should he sit on the potty
5. how should i react when there is a accident

18 months is pretty young for real potty training, but if he’s interested, by all means give it a try.

1. You could put him on every two hours, though at this age he’s probably wetting much more often than that. You’ll probably need to put him on every 45-60 minutes if you hope to ‘catch’ most of it.

2. If he really seems ready, rewards may help. If he’s NOT ready, they will just frustrate him. (He wants the candy/toy/stickers, but no mattter how hard he tries, he can’t earn them. That’s not fair.

3. If he’s ready, 1-2 weeks. If he’s not ready, 6-12 months or more.

4. As long as he wants to sit there.

5. Comisserate, clean him up, and move on.
