Question by mommyrock: When should my toddler start verbalizing she needs to go potty?
I am potty training my 2 1/2 year old and she is doing wonderfully. But every time she goes potty in the toilet, it is because I prompted her to try. She has yet to tell me she has to go or simply go into the bathroom to go potty by herself. We are only 2 days into this process, but every time my daughter has an accident she never even said she had to go; which on average the ratio to her going in the toilet vs going in her pants is 10 to 1…so she’s doing great! But I don’t want her successes to come only because I am telling her to go. I’m using a book called Potty Training 1-2-3 and it prides itself on two things: 1. Potty training your child in 1-4 days and 2. Being very simplistic. So I’m left with a few questions that the book doesn’t answer.
Another piece of information is that thus far we have been using Pull-Ups rather than cotton training underpants or regular underwear. I don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

I can’t answer the first question about how long it will take before she starts to tell you that she needs to go potty, but my guess, from what you describe, is that it won’t be very long for your daughter. 10 to 1 sounds like great success.

I’m not at that stage yet. My daughter is only 17 months and we are just getting her used to having the potty around. She coincidentally used it twice about 3 months ago when I first bought it. She will sit on it every now and then, but she never uses it. (I wouldn’t have started so early but I live in China where the children are potty trained almost from day one.)

As for the pull-ups, I read somewhere that panties are better because it is more uncomfortable for the child and greater motivation to go in the potty.

Question by Johnny’s Mommy: When is the normal age to begin potty training boys?
My son is 18 months – there for a while, he was showing signs that he was ready…. But now he isn’t doing them anymore, lol.

I’m not rushing him…. I’m just wondering when the normal age is. I’m sure I’ll be able to see the signs when they come.

It’s never too early! Get a little potty and books and keep it in the bathroom, and when he feels like using it – he’ll use it! Good luck!
