Question by Hippie Thanksgiving: Has anyone used the Elmo potty training DVD?
Was it worth buying? Did it help at all?

YES – well my sister did with her daughter and I already bought it and our daughter is only 1 (won’t start showing it until around 18 mos though). My niece loved this show and it really helped her get ready to potty train. She was potty trained by (if not a bit before) 2 years old and I think this video really helped. I stayed with her for awhile while my sister was in the hospital delivering her 2nd child and my niece would ask to watch the “poo poo show” (LOL) and when she had to go potty, she wasn’t embarrased or shy about it (you know some kids hide or get embarrassed/cry when they’re older and go #2) but this video makes it very acceptable and normal to kids to get rid of the “scare” of the potty. It also encourages washing your hands, not being embarrased or ashamed, the excitement of buying big-kid underpants, etc. Another trick is to introduce the potty early- around 18 mos just put a little potty in the corner of the bathroom with some books nearby and even a stuffed animal. When you need to go potty say, “Mommy has to use the potty”, and even let him/her watch you go from the doorway to see how mommy goes to the bathroom (maybe reserve that for a few months later)…just to warm him/her up to the idea.
Anyway, the DVD is only like so it’s worth a shot. It certainly helped my niece get potty trained early, it’s funny for adults too (I cracked up at it) and I will certainly introduce it in a few months to my little one. Good luck!
