Question by cfisher4234: What are the first steps to take when potty-training?
We are beginning to potty-train our son. However, I have no idea what the first step is? Do I just sit him on his little potty every time I change him? Every time I go? What?

depends what method you want to use. this is what we did with my daughter, and though it was stressful at first, it worked and that pays off in the end!
we got rid of all of her diapers and bought the gerber training pants (they have more padding in them to catch accidents). i stayed home for a week and just put her in the underwear. we stayed in her playroom (it is a tile floor-easy to clean). i set a “potty timer” and every time it rang, i would yell “potty time!”. the first 2 days, every 30min. then after that every 45min, then on the last few days, every hour. only put him there for 3-5 minutes… read books, sing songs etc. if he goes, do the “potty dance” and he will be so excited. this makes it to where you dont need to be giving him treats when he goes. kids like it just as much to have complete parental attention.
by the third day, my daughter was yelling “potty time” with me when the buzzer would go off, and she only had 1 or 2 accidents. it took about a month to be completely accident free.
GOOD LUCK! patience is the secret key to potty training!

Question by LifeIsGrand: Question for working parents and toilet training toddlers in daycare??
Do you feel that having your toddler attending daycare helped with toilet training or did it drag out the whole potty training longer then necessary? Did you and your daycare provider work well as a team potty training partners or was it a potty training disaster with the child confused as to what was expected of him/her?
lookingfor1227,

My son spent 4 months being pottytrained at daycare only. He definitely was sent to the bathroom at my house and then he would scream and run from the toilet. He would then wet his pants. He would NEVER act that way at daycare. He eventually gave up the power struggle and from my daycare provider’s perspective he had been potty trained for months. sigh. At her house, he was really well behaved. He would save any naughty behavior for me. My daycare provider helped big time.
d*i*a*m*o*n*d*,

Do you even have children of your own??? This type of “split reaction” is quite common. Not only do some toddlers behave better at daycare but it’s quite common for school age kids to be well behaved at school but have behavioral concerns at home. Maybe you should quit watching the “Lifetime” channel and get a liitle more in touch with real life issues.

BTW, my kids are teenagers now and they’re fine. I was just asking this question out of curiosity.

Most of the time the daycare has them on a time fram that they stop every so offten and have them all go to the bathroom and then if they need to go in between they can. The problem comes in when the parents pick them up and does not keep up with it and make them stop and remind them to go or have them go every so offten untill they are use to going on their own. The parents take them home and just let them go in their pants and change them and don’t try to get them to use the bathroom so then they thinkif they don’t have to at home htey shouldn’t have to at school either. If you work with them on the same lines as the daycare you should have no problems. It shouldn’t take long at all.

Question by ben: toddler potty training issue?
my 2.5 yr old would go pee in the toilet without issue, but would only poop when i put toddler pants on during nap time. but from the last few days she is refusing to poop even in toddler pants or potty. she would tell me she has to go potty, but when i put her in the toilet she would cry ‘no poop’ and get down. she tries it very hard to hold it in. i tried bribing her, reading books even gave in to watch her favorite cartoon while she sits in the potty. nothing helps. she is even trying to hold her pee now. its very hard to see her go through all this pain, but i don’t know how to help her. i even gave her stool softener. has anyone gone through this? can you suggest something?

I feel your pain! My son is going through the same thing….I ended up bringing him to his doctor because he was so “backed up”. His dr prescribed miralax which really hasn’t helped. I have talked with other moms about this and came to the conclusion that every child is different, some of their kids have gone through the same thing but soon got over it and there have been other kids that haven’t and needed a little help. If she starts getting lathargic and wont eat, call her doctor! Also, give her lots of water and fruits….good luck!
