Question by Ian’s Mommy is A Fighter!: how and when to go about potty training boys?
I know I’m early on this, but out of curiosity, how old should we start trying to potty train our son? He’s a year old. And…how do we go about it…the big toilet, a travel on, a potty seat, cheerios in the toilet. I’m so confused!!

my little boy is 25 months, and he is using the potty regularly. I started training him at about 22 months old, i basically introduced him to the potty.. ie by choosing and buying a potty and every so often getting him to sit on it. That is the first hurdle. If they are not confident sitting on it just give it a few weeks.and then try it again. Then the best time for actual training is when they show signs of needing the toilet, stay dry for long periods and can pull their pants down. Once they are showing all these signs you can dry catching them when they need the toilet. Give them lots of praise and use a reward chart when they make it on time. Just remember not to get stressed about it if they have accidents. Eventually something will click in their heads and they will realise that they need to go and will tell you or even go themselves.

Cheap and practical.

It worked as a free standing potty, then as a seat insert for the regular toilet, then as a step-stool. 15 years later it still functions as a step-stool in our kitchen to allow the shorter family members to reach the top shelf.
